Cattail Trailhead: All-Terrain Vehicle / ATV Trails

All-terrain vehicles (ATVs) are allowed all year long. About 2.5 miles east of Almena, Barron County has developed an ATV intensive use area. There is a trailhead with rest rooms available. Located on Mildred Avenue.

NEW and upgraded ATV Cattail Trailhead. The Cattail trailhead has a new state of the art restroom facility, paved parking lot, ATV load/unload ramp, grills, and picnic area.

The Cattail State Trail travels for 18 miles on a former rail corridor between the communities of Amery and Almena in northwestern Wisconsin. Forests, farmlands, prairies, hills and various wildlife habitats surround the trail, which also passes through the Village of Turtle Lake. The trail is maintained and managed by Polk and Barron counties. The Village of Almena is very fortunate to have direct access to the trail right within the village! Have fun, be safe, and please obey the trail regulations.

ATV park located 4 miles east of Almena right off the ATV trails. This park was built in partnership by Barron County and the Dusty Trail Finders ATV Club

Shadyside Park

Playground, softball field, RV facility, Veteran's Memorial, pavilion, picnic tables, ice skating in the winter, plenty of room to run, walk your dog or play Frisbee! Reserve the Park!

Shadyside Park offers playground equipment for kids, a softball field, a new RV camp 8-site facility including water and electric hook-up, a Veteran's Memorial, pavilion, picnic tables, ice skating rink in the winter, and room to play Frisbee, run, walk your dog, and restroom facilities (available seasonally).

Barron County has 369 lakes and Polk County has 437.

Joel Marsh Wildlife Area is a 1,192 acre property located in Polk County. It consists of flowages, grassland, and upland forest. Find it two miles west of Turtle Lake off Hwy 8.

Loon Lake Wildlife Area is a 3,123 acre property located mostly in Barron County with a small portion in Polk county. It consists of rolling upland oak, maple, and aspen forest, grass fields, waterfowl flowages, pothole lakes, lowland brush, and the Apple River. Find it four miles north of Turtle Lake or four miles south of Cumberland.

Rice Beds Creek Wildlife Area is a 3,181 acre property located in Polk County. It consists of rolling oak, aspen, and maple upland forest, lowland forest, stream, and ponds. Find it six miles northwest of Turtle Lake.

Skinaway Lake offers boating opportunities for non-motorized crafts. Wind through the waterways in a canoe or kayak. Drop a line and try stringing a pan fish- crappies, bluegills, sunfish, pumpkin seeds are a few of the available varieties.
